Application Instructions

Applicants must be in their sophomore
or junior year at Washington College.

Interested students are strongly encouraged to meet with the Starr Center’s
Jill Ogline Titus to discuss their draft proposals.

The Selection Committee looks for:

  • Exceptional ability and commitment, demonstrated intellectual appetite,
    and resourcefulness.
  • Thoughtfulness and detail of research proposal.

Demonstrated academic success, while important, carries less weight in this application process than student initiative and zeal for the research proposal.

Applications for Summer 2009 are due to the Starr Center’s mailbox
in William Smith Hall by April 17, 2009
.

Applications must include:

  1. Complete the Basic Application Form (PDF).
  2. Enclose a copy of your Washington College transcript (unofficial copies are acceptable; you may print one through Web Advisor).
  3. Personal Statement and Fellowship Research Proposal: In approximately 1000 words (typed, double spaced), describe the fellowship experience you propose and cite evidence for why you believe you should be selected as a Fellow. Please explain how the project will fit into your summer plans, and describe the ultimate outcome you envision: paper, thesis, multimedia presentation, etc. Please also list, if applicable, any contacts you have with experts in the field or institutions at which you plan to conduct research.
  4. Budget: Please outline your anticipated budget. Wherever possible, please provide actual expenses rather than estimates.
  5. Obtain the signature of a faculty member willing to help guide your project. You should plan to keep in touch regularly with your mentor over the course of the project, keeping him or her apprised of your progress through telephone or e-mail updates.
  6. Briefly list up to five of your most meaningful academic or extracurricular activities.
